PESTICIDE POISONING: Four patients discharged from hospital

KATHMANDU: Four of the 15 persons who were being treated for pesticide poisoning have been discharged from hospital.

Six members of a family were killed and 15 persons were taken ill after eating rotis made from pesticide-laced wheat flour in Pida VDC of Dhading on March 9.

The 15 persons were undergoing treatment at Manmohan Memorial Teaching Hospital, Swoyambhu.

With the patients’ health condition improving, we have started discharging them, according to doctors attending to them. Earlier, two patients were discharged after improvement in their health condition. Others too are recovering well, said the doctors.

Sunmaya Tamang, 12, Purna Bahadur Tamang, 10, Phulmaya Tamang, 65, Laxmi Tamang, 15, and Buddha Singh Tamang, 9, were discharged today, according to Nabaraj Rupakheti, administrative officer at the hospital. . Ten-month-old Ramila Tamang and Raju Tamang, 3, were discharged on March 13. “We have asked them to contact the hospital if they come across any health complications,” he added.

Samjhana Tamang, 28, one of the patients, gave birth to a baby boy yesterday morning at the hospital. She had a normal delivery, said the hospital.

“Some symptoms of poison were seen in the newborn, so he is under observation at the pediatric intensive care unit,” said hospital.

Thuli Maya Tamang, 41, Bir Bahadur Tamang, 50, Buddha Laxmi Tamang, 20, and Nuga Maya Tamang, 30, will be shifted to the general ward tomorrow, said the hospital. “Symptoms of pesticide poisoning can be seen for a month or two, so the patients will be discharged only after confirming that they are out of danger,” said Dr Ram Prasad Shrestha of the hospital. “Samjhana’s son will be treated for free at the hospital throughout his life,” said Dr Shrestha.
